School of Choice Survey - Elementary School

Capistrano Unified Announces Next Superintendent

Kirsten Vital to Lead the Highest-Performing, Large School District in California


SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO— Kirsten M. Vital has been named the new Superintendent of the Capistrano Unified School District, succeeding Dr. Joseph M. Farley who will retire on July 1, 2014, as the leader of Orange County’s second-largest school district.

The Board of Trustees made the selection of Ms. Vital following a closed session meeting on June 14, 2014. A contract is expected to be ratified on Wednesday, June 25 at the Board of Trustees’ regularly scheduled meeting.

Ms. Vital Superintendent comes to CUSD from Alameda Unified School District in Alameda, California, where she is Superintendent.

A seasoned educator, Ms. Vital has held key leadership positions in some of California’s largest districts, including Los Angeles Unified School District and Oakland Unified School District. Vital has been a teacher, an assistant principal, principal, and a college professor.

To find the ideal candidate, the Board of Trustees conducted a nationwide search. The search was guided by a detailed list of leadership criteria, a web-based survey, community forum, and responses from focus groups representing community and district stakeholders.

Board President John M. Alpay expressed his confidence in Vital, "We wanted to ensure that we had the right person for this very important role during this critical time in our District," he said. "Because of her demonstrated track record of success, the Board of Trustees is certain that Kirsten Vital is the right leader who will take our District to new heights of student achievement."

Retiring Superintendent Dr. Joseph M. Farley has been widely praised for his leadership of the District over the last four years. Capistrano Unified schools have consistently ranked in the top one percent of California’s public schools. Successfully weathering the most recent economic recession, the District’s fiscal position was certified as "positive" by the Orange County Department of Education.

With over 4,000 employees, the new Superintendent will take the helm of the largest employer in South Orange County.

Nominate Your Favorite Classified Employee by Friday

Nomination Period Ends March 21


The nomination period for the Capistrano Unified School District 2013 Classified Employee of the Year Program ends Friday, March 21.

Nominations will be accepted in six categories: Child Nutrition; Maintenance and Operations; Transportation; Para-Educator and Instructional Assistance; Office and Technical; and Support Services and Security. Nominees must be a classified employee of the Capistrano Unified School District, including all schools (preschool through grade twelve) and central office departments, with at least five years of service in the nomination category.        

Signed nomination forms are due in the Communications Office by Friday, March 21. Applications are available online at and at school sites. Transportation dispatchers, secretaries, mechanics, campus supervisors, groundskeepers, delivery drivers, and accounting technicians are just a few of the job titles eligible to be nominated for the award.

District winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony on Monday, May 19 and are eligible to compete in the Orange County Department of Education Classified School Employee of the Year program. Winners at the county level will then compete in the statewide awards program.

Last year’s winners were: Office and Technical – Norma Maldonado, Bilingual School Clerk, Kinoshita Elementary School; Para-Educator and Instructional Assistance – Jana Hertz, Braille Transcriber, George White  Elementary School; Child Nutrition – Anita Claud, Food Service Cashier, Vista del Mar Elementary School; Maintenance and Operations – Arturo Gonzalez, Custodian, Castille Elementary School; Transportation – Floyd Genadry, School Bus Driver; and Support Services and Security – Elizabeth Sullivan, Campus Supervisor, Bernice Ayer Middle School.

We’re excited about our new Mixed Bag fundraiser.  Together we give back to Viejo & help the environment.  Mixed Bag Designs offers colorful bags and accessories that are reusable, recyclable and ridiculously cool.  These items would make great Easter, Mother’s Day, and Teacher Appreciation presents.

New Spanish Immersion Preschool Program at Viejo

Capistrano Unified School District is excited to announce a new Spanish Immersion Preschool program starting in September of 2013. This will be a full immersion program for preschoolers. The program will offer one classroom at San Juan and Viejo Elementary with a Tuesday/Thursday class for three’s (three by Sept. 1) at $240.00 per month and a MWF Class for Pre-K (four by Sept. 1). Kindergarten Round-Up

Viejo Elementary School, in Mission Viejo, will be holding its annual Kindergarten Roundup for parents/guardians of incoming Kindergartners for the 2013/2014 school year on Friday, February 8th at 9:00 a.m. in our multipurpose room. This event is intended for parents only. Principal Doug Kramer will present an informative description of the Kindergarten program. Parents/guardians will then have an opportunity to meet Kindergarten Teacher Sandra Farias.



A child turning 5 years old on or before October 1, 2013 may enroll in Kindergarten for the 2013-14 school year. A child turning 5 years old on or before September 1, 2014 may enroll in Kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year.

In order to pick up a registration packet at the Roundup you must show at least one proof of residency (a current water/gas/electric bill with a service & mailing address in our attendance area). If you are unable to attend the Roundup you may register on-line beginning on March 1, 2013 at or at You may then bring the on-line registration information to the office beginning March 4th between the hours of 8:30-2:30 and complete the registration packet at that time.

Completed registration packets will be accepted in the office beginning March 4, 2013. Packets must be complete and ALL required documents must be presented at the time the paperwork is turned in for the packet to be accepted. A check-off list of all required documents will be included in the registration packet.

La Ronda de Kinder anual para padres/tutores de alumnos que van a ingresar a la Escuela Primaria Viejo, ubicada en Mission Viejo, en el ciclo escolar 2013/2014    se va a llevar a cabo el día viernes, 8 de Febrero a las 9 a.m. en el Salón Multiuso.  Este evento es para adultos únicamente.  El Director Doug Kramer va a realizar una presentación informativa del programa de Kinder, tras la cual los padres/tutores tendrán la oportunidad de conocer a la Srta Sandra Farías, una de nuestras maestras de Kinder.

Although our PTA Membership contest is over, we will be taking membership forms all year. If you still have not joined PTA, please do so! Becoming a PTA member does not obligate you to do anything at the school. You can help out as little or as much as you want.
Becoming a PTA member not only helps pay for programs for the school, but it also shows the folks in Sacramento that we care about our school!! The more members we have the better we look! So please join. If you have joined, talk to other parents who have not and let them know how important it is to the school!

Sandy Hook Elementary School

Dear Viking Families, 


We are all saddened by the tragedy that happened last week at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. This tragedy has caused all of us to reflect on why this happened. What could have been done differently to prevent it? What can we do in our own school to make it safer? My number one job, before educating your child, is to ensure their safety. I want to reassure you that your child is safe at Viejo. 


On Monday morning, I contacted Paul Schaaf, Orange County Sheriff Deputy and School Resource Officer, at Capistrano Valley High School. Paul and I walked the Viejo campus together and reviewed our lockdown procedures and visited each room. Additionally, we spoke to each of the teachers and reviewed emergency procedures and exit routes for their students.


I’d also like to take this opportunity to review the check-in and check-out procedures for Viejo Elementary. It is important that we all work together to ensure the safety of each child in our school. It is very important that every person check-in at our front office every time they visit our campus, and check-out when they leave. Yes, it can take some additional time and it may be inconvenient, however, this simple procedure allows us to know who is on our campus and the reason for their visit. If you’re picking up your child early, please be prepared to show your picture id to our front office staff.


We have also asked our classroom teachers to send their daily attendance reports into the office by 8:15 a.m. each morning. We think this is extremely important because that way we can account for all of our students at the earliest possible time. This is invaluable should we have an emergency situation on our campus. Therefore, we ask that parents that are arriving tardy to school bring their child to the front office. All of our outside classroom doors will be locked after the start of school daily.


All the Viejo teachers, staff, students, and parents have asked what they can do to support the Sandy Hook Elementary School community. Tamara Bush, Viejo PTA President, has connected our teachers with a National PTA campaign to support the Sandy Hook Elementary children. As you may know, the students of Sandy Hook Elementary will be moving to a new school in January. The Sandy Hook Elementary School PTA would like us to help them welcome the students into their new school by creating a “Winter Wonderland”! They would like each of our students to create a snowflake that will be placed throughout their new school. Remember that each snowflake is unique! Therefore, Mrs. Bush and the Viejo PTA will be distributing white paper to the teachers for each of our students to create a snowflake for the students at Sandy Hook Elementary. We will be sending those snowflakes to the students at the end of this week.


Finally, I would like to attach a two-page article written for teachers and parents to help them support their children when a tragedy like Sandy Hook takes place. I hope it will be helpful to you and your family.

Winter Recess/Christmas Holiday Closures

All Capistrano Unified School District schools will be closed for Winter Recess and Christmas holiday from December 22 through January 6. Schools will reopen on Monday, January 7.

Capistrano Unified will also close its District Office from December 22 through January 6, due to budget cuts and negotiated furlough days. 

If an emergency arises at any of the CUSD sites, please call the CUSD Maintenance and Operations emergency phone number at (949) 234-9527 during regular working hours, or the after-hours (nights and weekends) emergency number at (949) 493-2748.

The Capistrano Unified Council of PTSAs (CUCPTSA) will be hosting Dr. Harley Rotbart, professor and vice chair of pediatrics at the University of Colorado and author of the national best selling book, No Regrets Parenting––Turning Long Days and Short Years into Cherished Moments with your Kids, Wednesday, February 20 at 6:45 p.m., in the Dana Hills High School Porthole Theater.

Annual Project Tomorrow Speak Up Survey

The annual Project Tomorrow Speak Up Survey provides CUSD with a suite of online surveys and reports to collect authentic feedback from students, educators and parents.   The survey allows us to gather unique data from our district stakeholders, conduct a needs assessment, and create a vision for 21st Century learning. We are also able to use the data to create and inform technology initiatives in CUSD. We are asking parents and CUSD stakeholders to take the 2012 Project Tomorrow Speak Up Survey at

Cookie Dough Distribution: November 26th

The cookie dough and prize pick-up is scheduled for November 26th from 1:30pm-5:30pm in Room 19. The cookie dough must be picked up because we are unable to store it. The PTA Membership contest has been extended to November 30th. We want to give you all a chance to not only help Viejo's programs by becoming a vital part of the school as a PTA member, but also give you a chance to help your child's class win the Classroom contest.
Please look for PTA Membership envelopes when you attend your child's Parent-Teacher conference and become a part of a great organization! Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences (Nov. 5-9)

Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held from Monday, November 5 through Friday, November 9. The Kindergarten Two-Way Language Immersion Parent Information meetings are scheduled for the following dates:

  • Wednesday, January 9,16, 23, & 30

All tours will start at 8:15 a.m. and take place in Room 19.


Parents that live in the Viejo attendance area who have children that are of kindergarten age (5 years old by October 1, 2013) for the 2013-14 school year can also attend the Viejo School Kindergarten Round-Up on Friday, February 08 at 9:00 a.m. to learn about the Two-Way program.

New School Dismissal Procedures

The Kindergarten playground is closed between 1:20 and 2:20 p.m. daily (and between 12:45 and 1 p.m. on Wednesdays) due to student dismissal.

Please do not allow your child to play on the playground during those times.

Also, please be advised of our new school dismissal procedures:

If you choose to walk up to school to collect your child, please meet him/her by the Student Holding Area (at the Kindergarten playground).

If you prefer to drive up, please make sure to observe all traffic rules, and drive up to our ‘Valet Area’ (over the parking lot crosswalk). Teachers will radio up the name of your child to the adult in charge of the Student Holding Area, and your child will walk down to meet you. :)

Thank you for your cooperation. Please remember that your children’s welfare is our #1 concern!

4th Grade Music Demonstration Concert

Parents of 4th Grade Students,

Over the past eight weeks your child has been alternating classes between General Music and Violin.  This has enabled them to participate in two different musical experiences.  The experimenting is coming to a close and the children are going to be deciding what they would like to do for the entire year.  We would like to invite you to join us in our last class meeting on Friday, October 26 from 1:25 – 2:05pm, for a demonstration of what we have learned. We hope to see you there!!

Cookie Dough Orders Due Monday, Oct. 22nd

Starting Wednesday, October 3, Viejo Elementary students will be asked to participate in the sale of Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough. The Viejo PTA organized this fundraiser to raise money for programs and activities such as Art Masters, Music, purchase of new books for the Viejo School Library, and Class Field Trips. All orders along with money will be due on Monday, October 22nd to your child’s teacher. Cookie dough delivery will be at the end of November or the beginning of December before we break for the holidays (just in time for holiday baking). Nobody can resist an ooey, gooey, fresh-baked cookie-especially when it’s from Otis Spunkmeyer.

If you do not want to sell cookie dough, please consider a donation. Suggested donation amounts: $20, $40, $60 or other amount.

Back to School Night on October 3rd

Viejo Elementary School will be conducting their Back to School Night for parents on Wednesday, October 3rd.  Families with children in kindergarten, first, and second grade will go to their child's classroom at 6:00 p.m. Families with children in third, fourth and fifth grade will go to their child's classroom at 7:00 p.m. 

Back to School Night is an important meeting that all parents should attend. The classroom teachers will be sharing important information about the curriculum, homework, classroom management, and classroom procedures. Please remember this is a meeting for parents only.

We are pleased to announce that CUSD is offering the Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program for fall of 2012.   To qualify, students must turn five years old Nov. 2-Dec. 2, 2012.    TK is being offered to students who, due to the kindergarten age rollback, miss the cutoff to enter kindergarten.   This will be the first year of a two-year kindergarten program provided for in the SB 1381 legislation or the Kindergarten Readiness Act 2010. Parents will need to transport their children.  At the end of the TK year, students will matriculate to their home schools for regular kindergarten.

To pre-register for the program, go to CUSD’s website under Parent Links, Transitional Kindergarten and Intent to Register.  The Intent to Register may be emailed directly to the District or delivered to the District office.  Pre-registered students will be assigned to one of three sites throughout the District, Crown Valley, Benedict and Bathgate Elementary Schools.  If you have any questions, please call or email Becky West at  or 949-234-9261.

Important Parent Portal Registration Information- sign- up by June 22!!

Dear Parents:

The CUSD Parent Portal is now available for parents of all current K-12 students.  We strongly encourage you to register for a Parent Portal account before school offices close in June, so you are able to take advantage of the new online re-registration system for the 2012-13 school year.   When the window opens in August, parents with portal accounts will have the ability to use this online system for re-registration, rather than completing the large, traditional paper packet. Parents will also have the ability at any time during the year to update student demographic and emergency contact records, view real-time daily attendance reports, print report cards and transcripts and also be able to download important documents directly from the portal. 

Letters were mailed home the week of February 13 to parents of secondary students with specific information related to Parent Portal account creation. Parents of elementary students received their letters during parent conferences.  The information in the letter includes your student’s ID, home phone, and a unique verification code which will be needed during the portal registration process.  Using the information from the letter, simply logon to where you will find directions and a link for creating your Parent Portal account.  There is also a portal link on each school’s homepage. A HELP link is available at if you have questions during the registration process.  If you have lost your letter, please contact your school office before the last day of school.

Registration for Summer Camps Now Open

District Offers Programs for Students to Stay Active, Engaged During Break

            South Orange County children can take advantage of a full range of enrichment activities and athletic classes through the Capistrano Unified School District community education program, also known as ACE.

            “These activities and camps are a great way for students to stay active and engaged both mentally and physically during the summer months,” Superintendent Joe Farley said. “Our community education programs offer a number of high quality choices for students and their families.”

            Among the diverse offerings are classes in computer game design, cooking, math and video production. Group, private, and semi-private swim lessons are available at four high schools and sports camps for students of all ages will be offered.             Returning this summer is the UC Irvine Writing Project, a three-week standards-based program that offers students an opportunity to develop their writing skills. An afternoon session that focuses on math and science is also available. Last summer the project attracted more than 300 children. CUSD Parent Portal Registration Now Available at CUSD K-5 Schools

CUSD Parent Portal registration is now available at all CUSD K-5 schools.  Portal registration for 6th – 12th grade students will occur in January 2012. The confidential information you will need to register for your child(s) portal account will be distributed by your child’s teacher during your parent conference or at the end of Parent Conference Week. The document/information needed (see attached for sample letter) may also be picked up through the school’s front office after conference week. (Identification will be required.) 

Simply log onto where you will find directions and a link for creating your Parent Portal account.

Project Tomorrow Speak Up Survey

The annual Project Tomorrow Speak Up Survey provides the District with a suite of online surveys and reports to collect authentic feedback from students, educators, and parents.  The survey allows us to gather unique data from our stakeholders, conduct a needs assessment, and create a vision for 21stCentury learning. We are also able to use the data to create and inform technology initiatives in CUSD. We are asking parents and stakeholders to take the 2011 Project Tomorrow Speak Up Survey at Students will be taking the survey at school. Viejo School Book Fair October 3 - 7

The Viejo School Book Fair will be running from Monday, October 3rd through Friday, October 7.  The Book Fair will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every day except Wednesday, October 5. On Wednesday, it will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. but it will be open for our Back to School Night that evening.

The Viejo Book Fair will be located in Room 17 which is at the front of the school.  The money raised from the Book Fair will go to buying more books for our school library.  The Book Fair link to order books on line for up to two weeks after the book is

Back to School Night is the first opportunity of the year for teachers to share with parents the curriculum, daily instructional schedule, and the goals for the school year.   Back to School Night is an evening for parents only.

All schools in the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) will be closed on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, due to the power outage affecting Southern Orange and San Diego counties.

The District, like many school districts serviced by San Diego Gas and Electric, has decided to cancel classes for its students. A decision regarding Friday evening sporting events has not yet been made.

“We have no assurance that power will be restored by the time school begins tomorrow morning, and local emergency jurisdictions have advised the District to suspend classes until power is restored,” Superintendent Joe Farley said. “We are sorry for the obvious inconvenience to our working families, but it is clearly not proper to have students in school without electricity to power key systems including lights, refrigeration, and computers.”

The decision to close schools was made for a number of reasons, including the lack of power at school sites and the difficulty many staff members will have commuting to work from their homes in Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties. Only the CUSD staff members who have been specifically notified should report to work on Friday, Sept. 9.

MEET AND GREET 11:50a.m. - 1:00p.m. on September 7

Viejo Elementary School will have a Meet and Greet on the first day of school which is Wednesday, September 7 immediately after school gets out at 11:50 a.m.  Parents can go to their child's classroom to meet their teacher and classmates. This will take place from 11:50 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.  All Viejo Teachers and Staff members will then report to the lunch tables at 12:15 p.m. Principal Doug Kramer will introduce all the Viejo teachers to the parents and community members.  The Viejo PTA, YMCA, Kids Factory, and other community agencies will have information tables available. WE look forward to seeing everyone.

Viejo Curriculum Nights: K-2 on Feb. 18 & Gr. 3-5 on Feb.19
The Viejo Elementary Curriculum Nights are scheduled for Wednesday, February 18 for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade and Thursday, February 19 for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.  The program starts at 6:00 p.m. for both evenings.
